With the flood season upon us and rain falling every other day, one of the most frequently used car accessories is undoubtedly the windshield wiper. But do your wipers make that annoying squeaking noise while you’re driving? In fact, wipers are among the vehicle parts that require relatively frequent replacement—mainly because they’re exposed to harsh external conditions such as acid rain, mud, sand, dust, and ultraviolet radiation. Wear and tear are inevitable.
It’s important to remember that wiper blades are consumable parts in everyday car use. Most 4S dealerships will advise owners to replace them after about six months of use for safety reasons. Otherwise, during a sudden downpour, aged blades may not clear the windshield effectively, and in severe cases, this can impair the driver’s visibility. The primary function of wiper blades is to remove rainwater and dirt, ensuring clearer sight while driving. So how should we properly maintain our wiper blades to slow down their deterioration?
01 When parking outdoors, the windshield wipers should be positioned vertically.
In the hot summer, a car’s windshield is directly exposed to sunlight, causing its surface temperature to rise above 50°C. Since wiper blades are made of rubber, prolonged contact between these blades and the scorching windshield can lead to deformation over time. As a result, the wipers may fail to effectively clear rainwater when it rains. Therefore, when parking outdoors for extended periods during the summer, it’s advisable to lift the wiper arms off the windshield.
02 Regularly Clean the Windshield Wipers
Yes, wiper blades need to be cleaned regularly, just like the rest of your car. Regular cleaning removes dirt and grime from the rubber strips, which helps slow down their aging. In addition, wipers are prone to accumulating sand and fallen leaves, so it’s important to brush these off before getting in the car—because decaying leaves and dust can seep into the wiper mechanism and cause it to wear out prematurely.
03 There are stains on the windshield; first wipe them off by hand, then use the wipers.
Wear on wiper blades is primarily caused by dirt, sand, and aging. When washing your car, if you spot sand grains or hard, stubborn grime on the windshield, first clean the glass surface manually, then spray a glass-cleaning solution onto the wipers to clean them—this will help extend the lifespan of the wiper blades.
04 Do not scrape the dust off the windshield.
Automotive wiper manufacturers advise that some drivers habitually activate the wipers before setting out to remove dust and debris from the windshield. While cleaning the glass itself is perfectly fine, failing to spray water first and then wiping dry can damage the wipers. If you need to remove dust from the glass, lift the wipers a few times to allow the washer fluid to be sprayed onto the surface. Once the glass is sufficiently wet, turn on the wipers to clean it—this prevents dry scraping, which can harm the wiper blades.
05 While servicing the wipers, don’t forget the wiper reservoir.
Maintaining the wiper reservoir is just as important as maintaining the wipers themselves. When it comes to caring for the wiper reservoir, first, always use only dedicated wiper fluid—never mix in laundry detergent or other cleaning agents. Second, be sure to refill the reservoir regularly; if the fluid quality is poor, the wiper solution can turn gel-like when it runs low, which may clog the spray nozzles. Finally, make sure the water you add is clean, as impurities can also lead to nozzle blockages.
